My friend David Saulsbury, a chemist, just reminded me of Newsweek's April 28, 1975, article, "The Cooling World," saying, "it is a good exercise to periodically go back and review the end of the earth predictions from the past. The discussion never changes, only the dates and a willingness to exchange cooling to warming to fit the narrative."He then listed a few interesting quotes that one could readily plug into global warming alarmist articles today---only these all were offered in support of … [Read more...]
More Evidence that Deep-State EPA Bureaucrats Aren’t Giving Up
Just in case you wondered whether deep-state bureaucrats at the federal Environmental Protection Agency had finally been brought under control, accountable to the people through their elected President and the EPA Administrator he appoints and the Senate that confirms the appointment, the answer is "No."Cause of Action Institute announced yesterday that it has discovered that, despite the fact that "the EPA informed the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) that as of June 2018, … [Read more...]
It’s Not about the Climate—It Never Was
Generally, I conclude most of my climate change presentations with the phrase, “It’s not about the climate; it never was.” Here, I would like to start with that statement. In this brief article, I will discuss why carbon dioxide isn’t the dangerous gas it is made out to be, why climate change is not an ‘existential’ threat to the planet, and why the Green New Deal is not a solution to climate change. Let me begin with a series of questions. Is our climate changing? The answer is clearly … [Read more...]
CO2, Early Blossoms, the Sun, and Climate Change
Sometimes laymen find better ways to communicate things than experts. Example? Wilhelm Peterson and I first got acquainted when he wrote me a letter some years ago, enclosing a donation to the Cornwall Alliance, and I noticed under his signature that in World War II he had piloted P-51 fighter planes based on Iwo Jima, escorting B-29 bombers on raids. Nothing prominent there, just a quiet, simple fact. My heart pounded as I realized I had just read a letter from a hero, a man who had … [Read more...]
The Uninhabited Mind of David Wallace-Wells
David Wallace-Wells shook up a lot of people with a "horrifying 2017 essay in New York magazine about climate change. It was an attempt to paint a very real picture of our not-too-distant future, a future filled with famines, political chaos, economic collapse, fierce resource competition, and a sun that 'cooks us.'" Now he's got a book out that builds on that article, The Uninhabitable Earth: Life after Warming, which Vox describes as "a brutal read," "more terrifying" than the "terrifying … [Read more...]
Shame on Scientific American and E&E News for Lying about John Christy
Scientific American, apparently following the lead of E&E News, headlined its report of Dr. John Christy's appointment to the federal Environmental Protection Agency "Scientist Who Rejects Warming Is Named to EPA Advisory Board." The truth---which E&E News and SA undoubtedly know, is that John Christy most certainly doesn't "reject warming." He manages the NASA satellite data that are our best source for truly global, all-latitudes, all-longitudes, all-altitudes atmospheric … [Read more...]
Has There Been a Dramatic Increase in Ocean Temperatures?
A pastor recently wrote to the Cornwall Alliance, I am currently responding to an online debate over a new report over rising ocean temperatures. The report says that once the raw data is passed through new methods of calibration and bias it shows a dramatic increase in ocean temperatures. I seem to remember that somewhere around the mid 1990’s that the people recording ocean temperatures changed their methods because the traditional recordings were not showing any increase in ocean … [Read more...]
Is Global Warming Causing More and Stronger Hurricanes?
The claim is common that global warming is generating more and stronger hurricanes. (And other tropical cyclones. Technically, as Paul Homewood points out, these storms are called hurricanes when they develop over the Atlantic or eastern Pacific Oceans, cyclones when they form over the Bay of Bengal and the northern Indian Ocean, and and typhoons when they develop in the western Pacific.) Is it true? Not according to the empirical data. Those show that there has been no significant upward … [Read more...]
Is the Case for Drastic Climate Policy a Case of Misplaced Expertise?
Jonah Goldberg, writing about climate change and climate policy (yes, there really is a difference between the two) in National Review, hit the nail on the head when he said, "expertise doesn’t necessarily transfer over from one field to another." What he had in mind was the silliness of thinking that climate scientists, because they are (we'll concede the point for the sake of argument) experts about climate, are therefore also experts about what to do about it (assuming anything should be … [Read more...]
Are We “Lukewarmers”?
A friend of the Cornwall Alliance wrote us recently, saying: I've just read Roy Spencer's Global Warming Skepticism Busy People, and I am a little surprised at how much he concedes to the alarmists, e.g., there is warming, it is partially anthropogenic, a majority of scientists do believe in anthropogenic warming, a rise of 5 degrees Centigrade would be a problem, etc. Are these all positions with which Cornwall Alliance agrees? Roy describes himself early in the book as a "lukewarmer." Is … [Read more...]
