Why It’s Misleading to Speak of “Ocean Acidification”
Calling a decline in pH of ocean water from 8.2 to 8.1 (which is calculated to have happened over recent decades, perhaps in response to rising atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration though other causes are possible) “acidification,” meaning “becoming more acidic,” is misleading at best. Something can’t become “more acidic” unless it’s already acidic, and a solution with a pH higher than 7.0 is by definition not acidic but basic. Approximately 200,000 people have died due to global terrorism in the last 10 years. During the same time, many millions of people (mostly women and children) have died due to policies promoted by Greenpeace and other “green” organizations (e.g. anti-DDT, anti-golden rice, anti-fossil fuel). Way back in June, John Christy and I called 2015 as being the warmest year on record … in the surface thermometer data. Climate Scientists are Steadily Reducing Estimates of Warming from CO2
Among climate scientists specializing in climate sensitivity there is a clear trend toward lower and lower estimates of it, as the chart below shows. Why? Because the empirical measurements of GAT have fallen so much lower than model-generated predictions. Low Climate Sensitivity Makes Fighting Global Warming Unwise
To achieve the IPCC’s 3˚ “best estimate” of warming from doubled CO2 since the Industrial Revolution by the end of this century, GAT would have to rise another 2.593˚ in the remaining 63.5 years, a rate of 0.41˚ per decade, which is 3.7 times as fast as the observed rate so far.
