Norman Borlaug: Still Feeding the World

by Paul Driessen

Norman Borlaug just turned 94 – and is still going strong. During the “Eat This” segment of their docu-comedy series BS, Penn Jillette beat Teller in a round of their “Greatest Person in History” card game. Penn needed just one card: Norman Borlaug. This Iowa farm boy and University of Minnesota agriculture graduate lived Thomas Edison’s maxim to the fullest. “Invention,” Edison once remarked, “is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.” Dr. Borlaug did most of his 99% in the sweltering fields of … [Read more...]

Biofuels Forcing World to Ration Food Aid

by Dennis T. Avery and Alex A. Avery

The World Food Program is preparing to ration food aid for the world's hungriest poor. Why? Primarily because we're burning food in our automobiles. The rich-country mandates for biofuels have doubled and tripled world food prices in less than three years. The World Food Program's costs are rising by millions of dollars per week and the donations aren't, warns WFP executive director Josette Sheeran. The WFP is trying to feed more than 70 million people in 78 countries with voluntary … [Read more...]

If Global Warming Were Real, It Would Mean Fewer Deaths

by BBC News

A seriously hot summer between now and 2017 could claim more than 6,000 lives, the Department of Health report warns. But it also stresses that milder winters mean deaths during this time of year - which far outstrip heat-related mortality - will continue to decline. The report is to help health services prepare for climate change effects. A panel of scientific experts commissioned by the Department of Health and Health Protection Agency (HPA) has looked at the way the UK has responded to … [Read more...]

Humpty Dumpty Policies

by Paul Driessen

Corporate decisions affect a limited number of workers. Government policies, by contrast, affect millions. The drive to eliminate fossil fuels, switch to a CO2-free economy and prevent computer-generated climate disasters could cost countless jobs and impact families all across America. European industries are already reevaluating investment decisions and canceling projects, largely because of an increasingly strict and unpredictable regulatory climate in the EU, according to World Energy … [Read more...]

ISA announces launch of Cornwall Network at Senate luncheon – Driessen

by Paul Driessen

Thank you for coming to this important event. I am here today not only as a representative of CORE, the civil rights organization that James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were working for when they were brutally murdered in Mississippi in 1964. I’m also here as an Eagle Scout, outdoorsman, Earth Day organizer – and former Sierra Club member and environmental activist. I say former, because (based on long personal experience) I have concluded that today’s environmental movement is … [Read more...]

Climate Change in a Nutshell: scientific, moral and theological implications of climate policy

by Cornwall Alliance

Few issues in recent years have fueled public debate as has global warming. Since first registering a blip on the public radar screen in 1988, when NASA scientist James Hanson argued that its existence was undeniable, the controversial subject has generated countless professional papers, articles, television broadcasts and international conferences. Indeed, the Kyoto Protocol – designed to address global warming by reducing fossil fuel use and thus greenhouse gas emissions – has become a … [Read more...]

Get Out Your Bed Nets:

by Cornwall Alliance

We must let Africans fight mosquitoes and disease the same way we do: with pesticides Gulf Coast residents are slowly recovering from Katrina’s winds, floods, anarchy, and tardy local, state and federal disaster responses. Now they face yet another peril. Millions of acres of brackish, polluted water could become fertile breeding grounds for billions of mosquitoes. Some fear the hordes could infect survivors with West Nile virus and encephalitis – or even malaria and yellow fever. They point … [Read more...]

Pascal’s Blunder: Miscalculating the Threat of Global Warming

by Jordan Ballor

Prominent religious voices in America, especially among evangelical Christians, are increasingly being heard in the debate over global warming. More often than not, evangelicals - many of whom could easily be described as political and cultural conservatives - see climate change as a man-made problem. The National Association of Evangelicals, a coalition representing 52 member denominations, called on policymakers in October to pay more attention to the problem of “environmental … [Read more...]
