Curry Deals Another Blow to Climate Consensus

by E. Calvin Beisner

Georgia Tech climatologist Judith Curry dealt a serious blow to the appeal to consensus on climate change in her paper "Climate Change: No Consensus on Consensus," three years ago. She pointed out (among lots of other valuable things) that, whatever value consensus might have in science (as opposed to politics), consensus is significant only if it arises spontaneously, but the alleged consensus on climate change had been assiduously manufactured by the IPCC. She's followed the subject a good … [Read more...]

Methane Monster—Not

by E. Calvin Beisner

Been hearing about the methane monster that's going to cook the planet? The Independent, Salon, Mother Jones, Alternet, Arctic News, and the Arctic Methane Emergency Group have all trumpeted it, and the methane message becomes the more dire as we approach Paris, with 5-alarm fires raging at TruthOut and Real News Network. Irreversible positive feedback loop: warming Arctic releases methane that warms the air that releases more methane that warms the air that releases more methane until we all … [Read more...]

It’s Official: July 2015 Is, and Isn’t, the Hottest Month on Record!

by E. Calvin Beisner

NOAA breathlessly reports, "July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded for the globe." CNN, USA Toady---oops, that's USA Today---, BBC, and lots of other mainstream media lapdogs all obediently reported it. But laymen need to pause for a deep breath before panicking. First, "ever recorded" means back to 1880 (conveniently leaving out the Holocene Climate Optimum, Minoan Warm Period, Roman Warm Period, and Medieval Warm Period, all of which exceeded modern temperatures), and "recorded" means by … [Read more...]

A Mere Couple of Degrees, a Mere Single Thermometer–and a Matter of Integrity

by E. Calvin Beisner

Climatologist Patrick Michaels detected an error in the temperature record at Reagan National Airport recently, and reported it to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang, which confirmed the error and duly reported it to the National Weather Service, which acknowledged the error and replaced the instrument (which for the last year and a half has been reading 1.7 degrees F too high). So far so good. But then, as Michaels reports and comments: ... the National Weather Service told the Capital … [Read more...]

Extra! Extra! Missing AGW Intensifies California Drought!

by E. Calvin Beisner

The Old Gray Lady's (aka New York Times) perennial climate alarmist reporter Justin Gillis eagerly reported a new paper, “Contribution of anthropogenic warming to California drought during 2012-2014,” published in Geophysical Research Letters, claiming that anthropogenic global warming (AGW) might have intensified the current California drought by 15 to 20 percent. Alas, nasty facts get in the way, like these: The drought started in 2012, but there's been no statistically significant global … [Read more...]

Is John Cook, 97% Consensus Author, an Identity Thief?

by E. Calvin Beisner

As "everybody knows"---hey, even President Obama lectured us on the fact!---97% of all scientists agree: global warming is real and dangerous, and we must take drastic steps to stop it. The "researcher" behind that claim is University of Western Australia psychology postgraduate John Cook, whose "study"  has been torn to shreds for bad data handling, bad sampling, bad literature interpretation, and horrendous statistical methodology. Cook is also the main man behind the climate alarmist website … [Read more...]

Is Pope Francis Contributing to Human Trafficking?

by E. Calvin Beisner

Speaking to a gathering of mayors from around the world at the Vatican July 21, Pope Francis urged action to reduce global warming, saying he particularly hopes the UN climate summit later this year will address how it "affects the trafficking of people." Problem #1: Human-induced climate change has not affected the trafficking of people, or even migration in general. The one and only candidate for climate-change refugee status, a man from the island of Kiribati, just lost his case on appeal, … [Read more...]

“The Pause” Survives NOAA’s Assault

by E. Calvin Beisner

Climate alarmists the world over heaved a sigh of relief a little over a month ago when a team of NOAA scientists led by Tom Karl published a piece in Science purporting to disprove "the pause" in global warming. The sigh was short lived, though, since quite a few able critiques of Karl et al. 2015 appeared quickly, a number of them linked in my earlier blog on the subject here. Now the Global Warming Policy Foundation has published, together in a single post, two new critiques, by David … [Read more...]

IPCC’s Hypersophisticated Forecasts vs. Scott Armstrong’s Super-Simple Forecast: Who Wins?

by E. Calvin Beisner

The essence of science is testing predictions by comparison with real-world observations. Al Gore and the IPCC have been saying for years that human emissions of CO2 would cause global warming at a rate of 3C per century. But IPCC's forecasts violated 72 out of 89 relevant principles of scientific forecasting. In 2007, Scott Armstrong, professor at the Wharton School and a specialist in forecasting methods, challenged Gore to a bet. They would track changes in global average temperature (GAT) … [Read more...]

Richard Keen: The Science Is Settled

by E. Calvin Beisner

Richard Keen, Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Science, University of Colorado, Boulder, put it bluntly in a recent personal communication: Climate Science has degenerated into a league of collaborators who suppress evidence, stifle dissent, censor unwelcome facts, and control the funding purse strings, all in the name of "settled science."  In a way, the science is settled---the forecasts of catastrophic global warming are irreversibly wrong.  Over the past 30 year the evidence of human … [Read more...]
