The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, with 30 named storms, is going down in the record books as having the most named storms of any season on record. But are we comparing apples and apples—or apples and oranges? Some people blame the recent increase in named storms—tropical storms and hurricanes—on global warming, and infer that we must stop spewing CO2 into the atmosphere to curb the warming and so prevent the increase in storms and the damage they cause. But the raw data for hurricane history is … [Read more...]
Is 2017 Really the First Year since 1850 with Two Category-4 U.S. Landfall Hurricanes?
Keeping up the (false) drumbeat that manmade global warming is causing more frequent and stronger hurricanes, lots of media outlets, following the spectacular Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, have proclaimed 2017 the first time in the 166 years of records in which two Category-4 hurricanes made landfall on the mainland United States in the same year.Among them were USA Today, PBS, Forbes, Fortune, Slate, The Daily Beast, Business Insider, New York Magazine, Townhall.com, … [Read more...]
4,300 Days Since Last U.S. Major Hurricane Strike
Wednesday of this week will mark 4,300 days since the last major hurricane (Category 3 or stronger, 111-129 mph maximum sustained winds) made landfall in the U.S. That’s almost 12 years. The last major hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. was Wilma striking Florida on October 24, 2005, one of several strong hurricanes to hit the U.S. that year. The unusual hurricane activity in 2005 was a central focus of Al Gore’s 2006 movie, An Inconvenient Truth, in which Mr. Gore suggested 2005 was … [Read more...]
Prayer and Practice in the Wake of Hurricane Sandy
As I write, much of the northeastern United States is reeling from Hurricane Sandy, which brought high winds and warm, moist air from the Caribbean. It joined with a “nor’easter,” which brought cold winds from the east, making a particularly devastating storm. Please join us in prayer for the roughly 50 million people in the area struck by this powerful storm. Pray for their safety, for their comfort as they suffer economic losses and often frightening situations, and especially for comfort … [Read more...]
Researchers Reverse Stance on Link Between Global Warming and Hurricane Intensity
Author of the theory that global warming breeds stronger hurricanes recants his view Noted Hurricane Expert Kerry Emanuel has publicly reversed his stance on the impact of Global Warming on Hurricanes. Saying "The models are telling us something quite different from what nature seems to be telling us," Emanuel has released new research indicating that even in a rapidly warming world, hurricane frequency and intensity will not be substantially affected. "The results surprised me," says Emanuel, … [Read more...]
