The Theologization of Global Warming Among American Evangelicals: Who Says Religion and Science Can’t Mix?

by E. Calvin Beisner

[Note: This essay was written in the summer of 2010 at the request of Dr. Patrick Michaels, intended for a book he was editing. His publisher declined to include it in the book because of its religious content. It was never published elsewhere until now. We hope it remains a helpful survey of the history of the debate over global warming among evangelicals up to that time.—ECB, March 11, 2016] Introduction In the last half decade there has been a blossoming of public concern about global … [Read more...]

No, 2015 Was NOT the Warmest Year on Record

by E. Calvin Beisner

Global warming alarmists the world over have been hailing 2015 as the warmest year on record. Reality check: The satellite data are in, and at 0.27 deg C above the 1981-2010 average) it's only the third warmest, behind 1998 (#1, 0.48 deg C above the 1981-2010 average) and 2010 (#2, 0.34 deg C above 1981-2010 average). Kudos to Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Dr. Roy Spencer, who collects the satellite data with U. of Alabama colleague Dr. John Christy, for providing this monthly update. As our … [Read more...]

Curry Deals Another Blow to Climate Consensus

by E. Calvin Beisner

Georgia Tech climatologist Judith Curry dealt a serious blow to the appeal to consensus on climate change in her paper "Climate Change: No Consensus on Consensus," three years ago. She pointed out (among lots of other valuable things) that, whatever value consensus might have in science (as opposed to politics), consensus is significant only if it arises spontaneously, but the alleged consensus on climate change had been assiduously manufactured by the IPCC. She's followed the subject a good … [Read more...]

It’s Official: July 2015 Is, and Isn’t, the Hottest Month on Record!

by E. Calvin Beisner

NOAA breathlessly reports, "July 2015 was warmest month ever recorded for the globe." CNN, USA Toady---oops, that's USA Today---, BBC, and lots of other mainstream media lapdogs all obediently reported it. But laymen need to pause for a deep breath before panicking. First, "ever recorded" means back to 1880 (conveniently leaving out the Holocene Climate Optimum, Minoan Warm Period, Roman Warm Period, and Medieval Warm Period, all of which exceeded modern temperatures), and "recorded" means by … [Read more...]

Extra! Extra! Missing AGW Intensifies California Drought!

by E. Calvin Beisner

The Old Gray Lady's (aka New York Times) perennial climate alarmist reporter Justin Gillis eagerly reported a new paper, “Contribution of anthropogenic warming to California drought during 2012-2014,” published in Geophysical Research Letters, claiming that anthropogenic global warming (AGW) might have intensified the current California drought by 15 to 20 percent. Alas, nasty facts get in the way, like these: The drought started in 2012, but there's been no statistically significant global … [Read more...]

Validation of IPCC’s Global Warming Forecasts would Require More than Tripling Warming Rate

by E. Calvin Beisner

At +0.11C per decade rate, Global Average Temperature would rise 1.1C in a century, not the ~3C generally predicted by IPCC without CO2 emission reduction. Actual increase in the 36.5 years since 1978 is 0.407C. To wind up with 3C increase in the century from 1978 through 2077, we'd need to add another 2.593C in the remaining 63.5 years, i.e., 0.41C per decade, 3.7 times the rate so far. Anybody got a good idea what's going to drive that more-than-tripling of the rate of increase? Or might it … [Read more...]

We Pray for the Honorable Scientists Who Are Being Attacked for Speaking Truth

by E. Calvin Beisner

Heavenly Father, Your Law clearly commands us not to bear false witness against our neighbors. Right now eight courageous people weigh heavily on my mind—eight climate scholars targeted by a politically motivated and baseless attack on their personal integrity because they are so intrepid as to stand against a powerful tide driven by enormous political and financial interests. Father, please vindicate Dr. Robert C. Balling of Arizona State University, Dr. John Christy of the University of … [Read more...]

Our Climate Numbers Are a Big Old Mess

by Patrick J. Michaels

For years, records from surface thermometers showed a global warming trend beginning in the late 1970s. But temperatures sensed by satellites and weather balloons displayed no concurrent warming. These records have been revised a number of times, and I examined the two major revisions of these three records. They are the surface record from the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the satellite-sensed temperatures originally published by University of Alabama's John … [Read more...]
