Guest column by Rosalie A. Lavelle
American Marxism (Simon and Schuster, July 2021) is a book filled with information on how the core elements of Marxist ideology have been ingrained in American society and culture. Marxism is now pervasive in our schools, in the press, in corporations, in sports, in Hollywood, in the Democratic Party, and in the Biden presidency.
Author Mark R. Levin is chairman of the Landmark Legal Foundation, a syndicated talk-show radio host, host of Levin TV, host of Fox News show “Life, Liberty, & Levin,” and author of 6 consecutive #1 New York Times best-selling books. He holds a BA from Temple University and a JD from Temple Law School.
The book’s seven chapters contain well-researched materials explaining the historical background of how this has happened to our country. It tells who the “main players” are who have corrupted our society and why this has happened. The book also explains what our responsibilities are as citizens as we strive to maintain the freedoms our forefathers bequeathed to us through our Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
In Chapter One, “It’s Here,” Levin points out that Marxism is already revolutionizing America. We are ALL immersed in it in our everyday lives ~ in our politics, schools, media, and entertainment (TV, movies, books, internet). Levin posits that the situation today is dire and threatens our freedoms, families, and security. Words like “progressives,” “Democratic Socialists,” and “social activists” are used by Marxists to obfuscate their true purpose because most Americans are hostile to the word “Marxism.” He does not believe that we are about to fall into the abyss of Marxism, but that we are already in the abyss and now must fight our way out if we want our great country to survive. Levin names names and gives a clear historical perspective on the “players” (Cloward & Pivens from Columbia University, Saul Alinsky, John Dewey, Herbert Marcuse, to name a few). He warns: “The more young people who are processed in America’s colleges and universities, the greater the chance for revolution—hence the reason Democrats push for free college and cancellation of student loans.”
Chapter Two, “Breeding Mobs,” delves into mass movements and their followers who believe America can be radically transformed into a “utopian” society with man becoming perfect—if only the people would surrender their liberty, free will, and security to the “cause.” Levin writes about Black Lives Matter and Antifa and explains that most who are attracted to such movements are among society’s “disenchanted, disaffected, dissatisfied, and maladjusted who are unwilling or unable to assume responsibility for their own real or perceived conditions but instead blame their surroundings, ‘the system,’ and others.”
In Chapter Three, “Hate America, Inc.,” Levin goes back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, when Marxists laid the foundation for present-day acceptance and indoctrination of Marxist ideology throughout academia, society, and culture. This chapter names some of the professors who use Marxism as a teaching tool and iterates how Marxism has spread throughout academia. The goal is to indoctrinate as many young people as possible in order to have an army of protestors ready to overthrow the government of the United States. The statistics in this chapter are eye-opening and frightening regarding the number of Marxists who are currently teaching in our colleges and universities throughout America. Parents beware!!
Chapter Four, “Racism, Genderism, and Marxism,” covers such interesting topics as Critical Race Theory (currently being taught in elementary and high schools throughout our country), and the people responsible for devising such a divisive theory. CRT is described as “pseudo-scholarship.” The theory was hatched at first by a small cabal of Marxist law professors, led by Derrick Bell, a Harvard law professor. It is based on victimization, emotional appeals, balkanization, and separatism. It is clearly a “Marxist-based ideology laced throughout with raw bigotry, antagonism, and hate.” CRT activists, like Marxist revolutionaries, are intolerant of contrary arguments and challenges to their views. Educational materials used throughout America are meant to indoctrinate our children in these radical theories. Our schoolteachers are being “re-educated” on how to teach them. The chapter also covers the “1619 Project” which makes the claim that “nearly everything in modern American life is tainted by the legacy of slavery.”
Chapter Five, “‘Climate Change Fanaticism,” presents a factual and fascinating expose of this insidious movement, how it is imbued with Marxism, and how its adherents are responsible for making sure scientists who do not believe in this theory are made to look like morons. (I used a yellow marker to highlight the most important and meaningful segments of this book. This chapter is almost completely yellow!) Fanatic believers in “Climate Change” would require “forced indoctrination, forced re-education, forced relocation, etc. In other words, as Marx preached, the existing society must be abolished – its history, families, schools, and religions—which may well require a period of despotism, to cleanse society of existing norms and replace them with the Marxist paradise.”
Chapter Six, “Propaganda, Censorship, and Subversion,” outlines the illusion that we have a “free press” in America and how most so-called “journalists” do not come anywhere close to the definition of journalism you will find in a dictionary. Most have abandoned the traditional role as news gatherers and have become social activists with a Marxist agenda. (Not all, but most!) One person mentioned in this chapter has gone so far as to say that “modern press is actually a highly negative force in our society.”
Chapter Seven, “We Choose Liberty!” (my favorite), outlines what we can do about saving America. Yes, we—you and I! We simply cannot expect others to rescue our nation as we continue living our lives as if nothing is amiss. If we do not act, we will lose our freedoms and our beloved country to those who have a deep hatred for everything we stand for. The Marxists are counting on our indolence and passivity and willingness to “let the other guy” take care of this problem. This is going to require each of us to become articulate about the problems we face which is made easier by reading and learning from this book. The ideas presented in this chapter vary in ease and intensity, but each of us can find our niche and do our part. Our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren are counting on us. Freedom, after all, is not free! My Recommendation: Go out and purchase this book, read it, take notes, and pass it on to family, friends, and neighbors. Advise everyone you know to read it, whether Republican, Democrat, or Independent. Send it to your congressman or senator. The more people who are familiar with the information in American Marxism, the better our chances of saving our country from a complete Marxist takeover. If you care about America and if you care about freedom, you must act … right away!
