This is the third in a series by Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D. (Meteorology), Principal Research Scientist, University of Alabama at Huntsville, exposing media bias in reporting about climate change. This first appeared as part of a longer article by Dr. Spencer on his blog. The yearly, area-averaged surface temperature of the Earth is about 60 deg. F. It has been slowly and irregularly rising in recent decades at a rate of about 0.3 or 0.4 deg. F per decade. So, let’s say … [Read more...]
Evidence of Media Bias about Climate Change Part 2: Greenland is Rapidly Melting
This is the second in a series by Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D. (Meteorology), Principal Research Scientist, University of Alabama at Huntsville, exposing media bias in reporting about climate change. This first appeared as part of a longer article by Dr. Spencer on his blog. The Greenland ice sheet gains new snow every year, and gravity causes the sheet to slowly flow to the sea where ice is lost by calving of icebergs. How much ice resides in the sheet at any given time … [Read more...]
Evidence of Media Bias about Climate Change Part 1: Amazon Burning
This is the first in a series by Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D. (Meteorology), Principal Research Scientist, University of Alabama at Huntsville, exposing media bias in reporting about climate change. This first appeared as part of a longer article by Dr. Spencer on his blog.A few days ago, The Guardian announced Large swathes of the Amazon rainforest are burning. I don’t know how this has suddenly entered the public’s consciousness, but for those of us who … [Read more...]
July 2019 Was Not the Warmest on Record
July 2019 was probably the 4th warmest of the last 41 years. Global “reanalysis” datasets need to start being used for monitoring of global surface temperatures. [NOTE: It turns out that the WMO, which announced July 2019 as a near-record, relies upon the ERA5 reanalysis which apparently departs substantially from the CFSv2 reanalysis, making my proposed reliance on only reanalysis data for surface temperature monitoring also subject to considerable uncertainty].We are now seeing news reports … [Read more...]
Record High Temperatures in France: 3 Facts the Media Don’t Tell You
Editor’s Note: The article below is the clearest explanation I can remember having read of why global warming alarmists are mistaken to point to record high temperatures in various regions as evidence or confirmation of global warming (let alone of manmade global warming). Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Dr. Roy W. Spencer explains three causes of the recent heat wave in France (and Western Europe generally): (1) Record high temperatures occur without global warming, a fact demonstrated by the … [Read more...]
The “Freak” Guadalajara Hailstorm wasn’t So Freakish
Recent news events regarding heat waves, record high temperatures, and even yesterday’s hailstorm in Guadalajara, Mexico, are commonly presented as evidence of a changing climate system. The trouble is that making such an association is a stretch, at best, for a number of reasons.Today I’ll deal with the Guadalajara “freak” hailstorm, which is claimed to have “dumped up to 6 feet of ice” on portions of the city. The Mountains of Northwest Mexico are “Hail Central”The high elevations of … [Read more...]
Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal wouldn’t slow climate change, but your electricity costs would skyrocket
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal would require Americans to rely on unreliable solar and wind energy that would raise electric bills by several hundred percent for every family and business, hit us with power blackouts and brownouts, worsen poverty and do nothing to slow climate change.Yes, you read that right. Even the drastic, unrealistic and multitrillion-dollar energy schemes in the Green New Deal would have no measureable impact on global … [Read more...]
Can Space.com Teach Us Anything Useful about Climate?
I saw a Space.com article today entitled, Can Venus teach us to take climate change seriously? While Space.com writers should know quite a bit about the other planets, the article was a fount of misinformation and gross exaggeration. The obvious purpose of the article was scare us into taking increasing carbon dioxide levels seriously, following on the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NC4) report (which I’m still trying to digest). After repeating the NC4 claim that “10 percent of the U.S. … [Read more...]
Chuck Todd Devotes an Hour to Attacking a Strawman
Chuck Todd, on a recent episode of Meet the Press, highlighted the issue of global warming and climate change. He unapologetically made it clear that he wasn’t interested in hearing from people on the opposing side of the scientific issue, stating: “We’re not going to debate climate change, the existence of it. The Earth is getting hotter. And human activity is a major cause, period. We’re not going to give time to climate deniers. The science is settled, even if political opinion is … [Read more...]
