With the rapid cooling now occurring in the global average tropospheric temperature, my previous prediction of a record warm year in the satellite data for 2016 looks…well…premature. Here’s an update of what the average temperature trend would have to be in the next 6 months for 2016 to tie 1998 as record warmest year in the 38 year satellite record: Basically, as long as the anomalies stay below the June value of 0.34 deg. C, 2016 won’t be a record warm year. If only I had kept my … [Read more...]
Whose Policies Kill More People: ISIS…or Greenpeace?
Approximately 200,000 people have died due to global terrorism in the last 10 years. During the same time, many millions of people (mostly women and children) have died due to policies promoted by Greenpeace and other “green” organizations (e.g. anti-DDT, anti-golden rice, anti-fossil fuel). I’ve said it before…I don’t really care where our energy comes from…as long as it is abundant and affordable. Until someone comes up with an alternative energy source with those two characteristics, … [Read more...]
2015 Will be the 3rd Warmest Year in the Satellite Record
Way back in June, John Christy and I called 2015 as being the warmest year on record … in the surface thermometer data. Given the strong El Nino in progress, on top of the official thermometer data warming trend, this seemed pretty obvious. Of course, everyone has their opinions regarding how good the thermometer temperature trends are, with periodic adjustments that almost always make the present warmer or the past colder. But I’m not going there today …. Instead, I’m going to talk about our … [Read more...]
Why ISIS Should Support COP21 in Paris…
After the horrific terror attacks in Paris Friday night, there is considerable speculation over the possible cancellation of the COP21 climate talks in Paris in a couple of weeks. I will remind you that President Obama has stated that the threat of climate change is greater than the threat of terrorism. I will also remind you that many believe that ISIS would not have arisen if not for climate change, specifically, drought in Syria caused by your SUV. It is only logical that ISIS should be … [Read more...]
Models vs. Observations: Plotting a Conspiracy?
John Christy and I received an email today from Marcel Crok, who presented our satellite observations-vs-models graphs to the Dutch version of the American Physical Society (APS). He said there was considerable push-back about the way we plot the data…not from the society itself, but from global warming activist bloggers. I’ve heard these objections before, and mostly ignored them as uninformed and lame, since I’ve never heard one from an actual climate scientist. But apparently it’s … [Read more...]
2014 as the Mildest Year: Why You Are Being Misled on Global Temperatures, OR: Why I Should Have Been an Engineer Rather than a Climate Scientist
I’ve been inundated with requests this past week to comment on the NOAA and NASA reports that 2014 was the “hottest” year on record. Since I was busy with a Japan space agency meeting in Tokyo, it has been difficult for me to formulate a quick response. Of course, I’ve addressed the “hottest year” claim before it ever came out, both here on October 21, and here on December 4. In the three decades I’ve been in the climate research business, it’s been clear that politics has been driving the … [Read more...]
Hey, Nobel Prize Winners, Answer Me This
As a climate scientist, I would like to see some answers to a few basic global warming science questions which I’m sure the U.N.’s Ministry of Global Warming Truth (also known as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC) can handle. After all, since they are 90% confident that recent global warming is manmade, they surely must have already addressed these issues: 1) Why are ALL of the 20+ IPCC climate models more sensitive in their total cloud feedback than published estimates of … [Read more...]
An Examination of the Scientific, Ethical, and Theological Implications of Climate Change
An Examination of the Scientific, Ethical, and Theological Implications of Climate Change Policy (PDF) Executive Summary Few issues have permeated or fueled public debate like the topic of global warming. Since first registering on the public radar screen in 1988 with NASA’s James Hansen’s famous pronouncement of its alleged existence, the controversial subject has generated countless articles, television broadcasts and international conferences. Indeed, the Kyoto Protocol – designed to … [Read more...]
