You Can Act to Prevent Implementation of California’s All-EV Plan

by E. Calvin Beisner

Last month, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced a rule by the California Air Resources Board to require 100 percent of new car sales in California to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035:“We can solve this climate crisis if we focus on the big, bold steps necessary to cut pollution. California now has a groundbreaking, world-leading plan to achieve 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035," the Governor said. He added:“This plan’s yearly targets – 35 percent ZEV sales by 2026, … [Read more...]

When Will EVs Crash the Grid?

by William Balgord

The day will come, if the political left is not stopped, when a preponderance of electric vehicles placed in operation will demand enough k-watt hours of power to bring down the grid during periods of peak demand. It already happens with some degree of frequency in California, and in Texas less frequently during its winter cold spells. The rest will not be far behind. The focus needs to be drawn away from the fact that an electric vehicle has no attached tailpipe to emit emissions. Even though … [Read more...]

 “Virtue science” reigns

by Christopher Essex

I was trying to preserve my sanity by avoiding the endless hyperbolic news stories on cringeworthy science-based policy. But, despite my best efforts, the tale of the Dutch farmers came to my attention. Those poor folks have their backs against the wall because their government has declared war on nitrogen! They might lose their land and livelihoods over this war, not to mention creating needless hunger in the world. Now Canada aims to do something of the same ilk to farmers here. … [Read more...]

EPA Takes Aim at Permian Basin in Continued War on Fossil Fuels

by E. Calvin Beisner

The federal Environmental Protection Agency has announced that from now through August 15 it will use infrared cameras mounted on planes to identify large emitters of methane from oil and gas wells in the Permian Basin, an area spanning west Texas and east New Mexico that supplies about 43 percent of the oil produced in America. The concern is that methane, a powerful “greenhouse gas,” contributes to dangerous global warming. It’s true that methane is about 30 times more powerful, molecule per … [Read more...]

‘Trust Us, We’re Experts’ Has Returned To A World Of Faith-Based Science

by Anthony J. Sadar

We are living in an era steeped in faith-based science. Deep trust in science, as defined by those perceived to be authoritative scientists in very complex scientific areas, has become blatant with the coronavirus crisis. To make sure we stayed healthy in addition to staying alive, we trusted what the scientific experts were telling us about the deadly disease. Now a certain amount of distrust of such expertise has set in.As the public learns more about the virus and the subsequent extended … [Read more...]

End Carbon Imperialists’ Impoverishment of Africa

by Vijay Jayaraj

When citizens in London, Vienna, and Berlin are at risk of blackouts due to energy shortages, their governments turn to coal-fired plants to rescue them. We witnessed this as the Russian gas embargo forced European states to suppress their revulsion to coal — a bit like a produce shortage causing vegans to run to steak houses.Image: Creative Commons under UnsplashBut what about Africa? Millions of Africans are being systematically forced by the elites of Europe and North America into a future … [Read more...]

Should an Environmental Regulator Teach Old Laws to Do New Tricks?

by E. Calvin Beisner

Eight-and-a-half years ago, E&E News called Joseph Goffman a “law whisperer” because “His specialty is teaching an old law to do new tricks.” The epithet was well enough deserved that Harvard Law Today repeated it five years later. Now, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is considering Goffman’s nomination to become Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation in the Environmental Protection Agency. What could possibly go wrong with a “law whisperer” in charge of EPA’s air and … [Read more...]

A Tribute to Patrick Michaels

by E. Calvin Beisner

(Listen to this article on the Cornwall Alliance’s Created to Reign podcast.)My first contact with Dr. Patrick Michaels was around 2006 or 2007, in the early, formative days of the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation. I had, over the previous two or three years, read at least five or six of the books he had by then written or edited on climate change, and I highly respected him as a careful, humble, yet confident scientist, fearlessly standing against “consensus” and … [Read more...]

The Man Who Saved Your Economy

by E. Calvin Beisner

(This article, published on July 18 and reporting on Manchin's action July 14, celebrated his action. Alas, the celebration was premature. Abandoning his commitment to oppose any such bill until inflation declined, Manchin embraced a new bill July 27---two weeks before the new monthly inflation rate is to be published and despite the fact that most analysts agreed that the rate would either rise or remain unchanged. We are intensely disappointed in the Senator.---ECB, July 28, 2022)Recently one … [Read more...]

Lying with Statistics About American Electric Energy Sources

by E. Calvin Beisner

Back in 1954 journalist Darrell Huff published How to Lie with Statistics. The book exposed many different ways in which people use statistics, even true ones, to foist off falsehoods.Today while looking for data on trends in the numbers of operating coal- and natural gas-fired power plants in the United States I came across an interesting example of lying with statistics, this one promulgated by the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA). The discussion that follows is rough; I don't claim … [Read more...]
