It’s not “code red for humanity.”The philosopher G.F. Hegel is notorious for having said that if facts contradict theory, then “um so schlimmer für die Fakten”—“so much the worse for the facts.” Not surprisingly, the idealist Hegel had a huge influence on another idealist philosopher, Karl Marx, whose “scientific socialism” was socialist but decidedly not scientific. Facts have never seemed to matter much to socialists—it’s theory that counts.Perhaps that underlies the propensity for some … [Read more...]
Climate Scientists Admit Exaggerated Warming
Last week, a group of scientists sent shock waves through the climate-science community. They boldly pointed out that current climate models exaggerate greenhouse warming. In other words, they confirmed what climate skeptics have been arguing all along: that most computer climate models forecast unrealistic warming -- warming not observed anywhere in the real world.Could this be a turning point for climate science? Has the hitherto staunch resistance to any kind of scrutiny regarding the … [Read more...]
The Final Years of Majuro—Are a Long Way Off
Refuting climate alarmists’ counterfactual claims is like playing whack-a-mole. Smack this one here, and ten others pop up there, and there, and there, and ….In the climate apocalyptic video propaganda category, the newest seems to be The Final Years of Majuro, posted to YouTube August 4.The film tells us, with all the authority of “science,” that the Marshall Islands (of which Majuro is the capital city), will disappear if global average temperature (GAT) rises beyond 1.5°C above pre-industrial … [Read more...]
Ross McKitrick: ‘Believing the science’ on climate change doesn’t mean any policy goes
Mainstream science and economics do not support much of the current climate policy agenda and certainly not the radical extremes demanded by activist groupsThere’s an assumption out there that if you “accept” the science of climate change, you are obliged to support drastic measures to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This is not true. The one does not follow from the other. Mainstream science and economics do not support much of the current climate policy agenda and certainly not the radical … [Read more...]
Faulty Forecasts and False Climate Narrative Hold Nations Hostage
The United States is the only major Western country that is not part of the Paris climate agreement, which seeks to restrict and reduce fossil fuel consumption across the world. But the country is not immune from the impacts of the restrictive energy policies the agreement imposes on its trade partners. One of those is my own country, India.India imports large amounts of coal, oil, and natural gas from the U.S., mostly to generate affordable power for its electric grid. That grid must grow … [Read more...]
Next-generation climate models: worse than ever!
Back in February, Pat Michaels dropped something of a bombshell. It was an exposé of the Achilles heel of alarmist climate science. He did it in a lecture, just posted to YouTube on June 11, at a joint meeting of the Independent Institute and the National Association of Scholars. What he showed was that practically all the climate models on which the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and lots of national governments rely are wrong---hopelessly, egregiously, starkly wrong. And all (but … [Read more...]
Climate Models vs Observations: 2019 Update
Back around 2014 many people, me included, were commenting on the discrepancy between climate models and observations. In a report for the Fraser Institute I showed the following graph:The HadCRUT4 series (black) was then dipping below the 95% lower bound of the model distribution. The IPCC itself in the 5th Assessment Report (2013) noted that out of 114 model runs, 111 had overstated observed warming since the late 1990s. That same year, Hans von Storch told Der Spiegel thatIf things continue … [Read more...]
How well do climate models simulate global temperature?
Earlier today I blogged on an article at Daily Caller about Dr. William Happer's resignation from the National Security Council. I pointed out that climate models simulate much more warming than actually observed over the relevant period.Someone responded, "Complete and utter bull^*@%. The modeling is accurate."Ignore the vulgarity's telltale sign that this wasn't by someone with a particularly scientific mindset. Is he correct in saying, "The modeling is accurate"?One needn't speculate to answer … [Read more...]
Evidence of Media Bias about Climate Change Part 4: Bait and Switch: Models replacing observations
This is the fourth in a series by Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D. (Meteorology), Principal Research Scientist, University of Alabama at Huntsville, exposing media bias in reporting about climate change. This first appeared as part of a longer article by Dr. Spencer on his blog. There is an increasing trend toward passing off climate model projections as actual observations in news reports. This came up just a few days ago when I was alerted to a news story that claimed … [Read more...]
Chuck Todd Devotes an Hour to Attacking a Strawman
Chuck Todd, on a recent episode of Meet the Press, highlighted the issue of global warming and climate change. He unapologetically made it clear that he wasn’t interested in hearing from people on the opposing side of the scientific issue, stating: “We’re not going to debate climate change, the existence of it. The Earth is getting hotter. And human activity is a major cause, period. We’re not going to give time to climate deniers. The science is settled, even if political opinion is … [Read more...]
