This is the second in a series by Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Roy W. Spencer, Ph.D. (Meteorology), Principal Research Scientist, University of Alabama at Huntsville, exposing media bias in reporting about climate change. This first appeared as part of a longer article by Dr. Spencer on his blog. The Greenland ice sheet gains new snow every year, and gravity causes the sheet to slowly flow to the sea where ice is lost by calving of icebergs. How much ice resides in the sheet at any given … [Read more...]
Climate Fears Fail to Keep Coal at Bay
Despite heightened fears of climate crisis, the global coal market remains upbeat. India and China, two of the largest producers and consumers of coal, have ramped up their coal production and show no signs of slowdown. The United States, Australia, and Indonesia follow the big two, but their production and consumption levels are far less than China’s. Reports came in early August that there has been a surge in Chinese coal mine approvals. In the first half of 2019 alone, the … [Read more...]
Fighting Malaria with DDT and Infertile Mosquitoes: You Can Help!
Dear Friends: What time is it? Take a look and see for sure. I’ll tell you later why. About a decade ago one of my sons, just turned nineteen, spent eight months assisting Christian missionaries in Ethiopia and Uganda. He saw how some of the world’s poorest people suffer—yet also how they can experience joy through knowing Christ. He actually saw a witch doctor converted. He saw people healed of terrible diseases by medical missionaries, children learning to read and write in mission … [Read more...]
July 2019 Was Not the Warmest on Record
July 2019 was probably the 4th warmest of the last 41 years. Global “reanalysis” datasets need to start being used for monitoring of global surface temperatures. [NOTE: It turns out that the WMO, which announced July 2019 as a near-record, relies upon the ERA5 reanalysis which apparently departs substantially from the CFSv2 reanalysis, making my proposed reliance on only reanalysis data for surface temperature monitoring also subject to considerable uncertainty]. We are now seeing news … [Read more...]
Why Climate Change Chicken Littles Demand Action NOW!
Britain’s Prince Charles said it: “the next 18 months will decide our ability to keep climate change to survivable levels.” There you go. 18 months. And you thought AOC was shrill! Why 18 months? Supposedly because, as Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, founder and director emeritus of the Potsdam Climate Institute, and one Pope Francis’s chief advisors on his 2015 environmental encyclical, put it, “The climate math is brutally clear: While the world can’t be healed within the next few … [Read more...]
Greenland’s Heatwave: What It Doesn’t Mean for All of Us
CNN ushered in August yesterday with a boilerplate scare story about a heat wave spurring rapid melting from Greenland’s ice sheet. Like many such articles, Sheena McKenzie’s “Greenland is in the grips of a heatwave. Here’s what it means for all of us” scares by presenting big numbers without putting them into relevant proportion: “In July alone, Greenland's ice sheet lost 160 billion tons of ice, according to Clare Nullis, spokeswoman for the UN World Meteorological Organization. That’s … [Read more...]
Apocalyptic Sea-Level Rise—Just a Thing of the Past?
On February 2, 1978—41 years ago!—The Wall Street Journal warned in a headline that “Low-Lying Lands Could Be Submerged by Climatic Disaster.” Fears of apocalyptic sea-level rise are nothing new despite the fact that they seem to have recently taken on a new life of their own, especially in South Florida, where I live. The only scientific correlation I can make with any certainty is that these fears rise in direct proportion to the number of socialists elected to Congress. So, … [Read more...]
Record High Temperatures in France: 3 Facts the Media Don’t Tell You
Editor’s Note: The article below is the clearest explanation I can remember having read of why global warming alarmists are mistaken to point to record high temperatures in various regions as evidence or confirmation of global warming (let alone of manmade global warming). Cornwall Alliance Senior Fellow Dr. Roy W. Spencer explains three causes of the recent heat wave in France (and Western Europe generally): (1) Record high temperatures occur without global warming, a fact demonstrated by the … [Read more...]
China’s Coal Bi-Polarity Expedites the Death of the Paris Agreement
The Paris agreement’s nosedive has been expedited by the growing skepticism about man-made global warming. However, the most significant threat to the agreement has come from countries that refuse to quench their addiction to coal. Among them is the largest consumer of coal: China. China’s continued defiance of the anti-coal establishment has dealt a lethal blow to the future prospects of the Paris agreement. Here are some key indicators from China which suggest that the chance … [Read more...]
“America’s Environmental Leadership”—An Oxymoron?
“America’s Environmental Leadership.” If you believe most media, most of the political class, much of academia, and certainly Hollywood stars (who of course are our intellectual betters), that phrase sounds oxymoronic. That’s how many people thought of it when President Donald Trump delivered remarks on “America’s Environmental Leadership” at a meeting in the White House Monday, July 8, which I attended. So, did the President, with several cabinet-level personnel, provide any reason to … [Read more...]
