Rare Earths First? Or Last?

by Duggan Flanakin

As Joe Biden and Kamala Harris take the reins of government and launch their program to “transition” America away from fossil fuels, they need to consider some hard realities. Chief among them is that no Green New Deal can succeed without major increases in US mining and processing – unless they want to make America even more dependent on China and Russia.Rare-earth metals are essential to 21st century technologies, including smartphones, lasers, night vision systems, weapons guidance … [Read more...]

Biden’s Climate Appointments and the Potential Disruption to the Global Fossil Fuel Market

by Vijay Jayaraj

With President-elect Joe Biden about to assume office, he will soon roll out his “clean energy” plan, aimed at reducing America’s dependence on fossil fuels. But such a move will cause ripples beyond America’s borders. It will likely impact key developing countries that have become increasingly reliant on fossil fuel imports from the booming U.S. oil and gas industry.Biden’s Clean Energy PlanIn December 2020, Joe Biden appointed his climate team, which included a person who served under the Obama … [Read more...]

Climate Change No Threat to India’s Agricultural Triumph

by Vijay Jayaraj

I meet a lot of farmers in India. Two-thirds of India’s 1.3 billion people depend on farming. When they learn that I do research in environmental sciences, the first question they ask is, “How is climate change going to impact agriculture in India?”Unpredictable MonsoonThe answer is not clear. Indian rainfall seasons have shown no specific trend over the past hundred years, and it is extremely difficult to predict the impact of warming or cooling. The farmers here—like those … [Read more...]

The Myth of Glorious Renewables

by Vijay Jayaraj

We all love energy solutions that make life better. It is an undeniable fact that coal propelled the Industrial Revolution and led to the alleviation of poverty in the West. More recently, the oil reserves in the Middle East have made it one of the most economically developed regions in the world.Despite their continuous support to the global economy, these fossil fuel sources have now become unpopular among the climate-sensitive, anti-fossil fuel, green lobbyists and environmental enthusiasts. … [Read more...]

Study suggests no more CO2 warming

by David Wojick

Precision research by physicists William Happer and William van Wijngaarden has determined that the present levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and water vapor are almost completely saturated. In radiation physics the technical term “saturated” implies that adding more molecules will not cause more warming. In plain language this means that from now on our emissions from burning fossil fuels could have little or no further impact on global warming. There would be no climate emergency.  No … [Read more...]

Wind turbines take a terrible toll on birds

by Vijay Jayaraj

There is a narrative on wind turbines that we hear so often: wind turbines are clean and green, and they help us tackle climate change through emission-free energy generation.Anything contrary to that narrative might seem untrue, especially after mainstream media’s relentless promotion of the narrative for the past one decade or so.As a young field ecologist, I’ve witnessed and studied about bird collision mortalities in the most serene Special Protected Area for bird conservation at Alentejo, … [Read more...]

Biden vs. Obama on Fracking

by Vijay Jayaraj

Fracking — a procedure to extract natural gas from earth — made headlines recently after Vice President Mike Pence and Democrat vice presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris brought it up during their debate.Leading up to the 2020 elections, both Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden and Senator Harris, on various occasions, have remarked that they will end fracking. But during the vice presidential debate, Harris denied Biden’s anti-fracking stance and instead remarked that … [Read more...]

A Plea for Checks

by Robert E. Wright

By checks I don’t mean your (outdoor) dining bills or paper orders for the payment of money, I mean mechanisms for reducing the power of government, as in the phrase “checks and balances.”Some checks, like the presidential veto, are as notorious as a certain deceased rapper and SCOTUS justice. While always assailed by critics, such checks are unlikely to be lost to time.Other checks are almost as obscure as Big Pun* and Thomas Johnson** but arguably just as important as the veto in some … [Read more...]

Return of the tiger: Wildlife conservation amidst rapid economic development

by Vijay Jayaraj

One of the biggest push backs to economic development today is that it destroys nature. Radical organizations like Extinction Rebellion label capitalism and agriculture as evil. More specifically, they blame the fossil fuel industry and the rapid industrialization for the loss of ecosystems and habitats. On September 10, 2020, the Guardian UK ran an article which stated “Wildlife populations are in freefall around the world, driven by human overconsumption, population growth and … [Read more...]
