Presidential candidate Joe Biden has introduced a $2 trillion Clean Energy Plan.Besides missing out on providing information about how the proposed transitions to “clean technology” would work, the extreme shift towards a fossil-free energy sector reveals the volatility in Biden’s approach.Fossil Fuel, Economy, and Radical EnvironmentalismEnergy sectors are the backbone of any economy. In the U.S., fossil fuels have been singularly responsible for fueling American industries, which in turn … [Read more...]

You Shall Not Make for Yourself a Carved Image
The Cornwall Alliance has produced a series of 23 lectures on the Ten Commandments. How do those relate to our usual focus on environment and development? Lots of ways. This is the second in a series of brief posts exploring some of them. “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous … [Read more...]
Freeman Dyson’s brief case against dangerous CO2-driven warming
At a lecture at Boston University a few years ago, Freeman Dyson, one of the world's top physicists, who replaced Albert Einstein at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, put very simply one of the most basic arguments against the notion that CO2-driven global warming is likely to be disastrous: In humid air, the effect of carbon dioxide on radiation transport is unimportant, because the transport of radiation is already blocked by the much larger greenhouse effect of water vapor. … [Read more...]
Caring for Creation: A Book of Good Intentions but Poor Science
As an evangelical Christian, I believe we should be good stewards of God’s planet. We should strive to reduce pollution to protect human health and the natural environment. We should explore new alternative energy sources, always seeking to maximize benefits and minimize harms. We should prioritize providing electricity for the 1.2 billion people who don’t have it—and consequently suffer high rates of disease and premature death. For these and many other reasons I applaud Mitch Hescox and … [Read more...]
Radio Interview: Students Indoctrinated in Environmentalism
A couple days ago I did an hour-long live radio interview with Dr. Terry Lovell on “KYCA Talks,” originating at Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ. Terry is a veteran professor of business and economics. His statistics specialty enables him to recognize quickly the gross errors in climate alarmism. During that interview, Terry repeatedly mourned the fact that so many students arrive in his classes with their minds already made up about global warming and other alleged … [Read more...]
Modern mavens and maxims of meteorological mayhem
Here’s a bit of earthy mirth for Earth Day 2016. Inspired by the atmospheric angst of the November-December 2015 Paris climate change conference, late last year, we proposed new weather wonkery c our versions of popular meteorological anecdotes like the witticisms of old that folks frequently used to stay ahead of storms. For example, one of the most familiar traditional axioms is “red sky in morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors delight.” We proffered alternative, … [Read more...]
A Christian’s Perspective on Climate Change: Conventional Energy Sources Are Necessary for Developing Nations’ Poor
Global warming has been making headlines consistently during the past two decades. The subject impacts global economic policies and thereby our everyday lifestyle. Amidst the smoke in the battleground arises the moral call of Christians to function as responsible stewards of creation. But how does climate change impact the marginalized of the world? What can we, as followers of Christ, do for the environment and the poor? The recent developments at the Paris climate change conference saw … [Read more...]
32 Books I Read in 2015 (Make that 33)
The vast majority of my time is spent reading or writing. Someone just suggested I tell about the books I’ve read so far this year. (I’d love to tell about the articles, too, but they’re far too many—typically a dozen or two a day, five or six days a week.) Perhaps others will be inspired to read some of them, too. So, here goes, in no particular order—which reflects my typical reading habits: Social Justice Isn’t What You Think It Is, by Michael Novak and Paul Adams, an excellent study of the … [Read more...]
Hollywood and the Environmentalist Movement: Eco-Fanatic Movies Have a Mixed History at the Box Office
Like other misguided ideologues, some in Hollywood have adopted the environmentalist or ecology movement to support their efforts to support big government. Their efforts paid off in 2006 and 2007 when Al Gore’s factually challenged, hysterical rallying cry for global warming, AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, earned a fair amount of money, at least for a documentary, and won a couple Oscars. AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH came out the same year as the pro-environmentalist cartoon HAPPY FEET, which raked in $384.3 … [Read more...]
