My friend David Saulsbury, a chemist, just reminded me of Newsweek‘s April 28, 1975, article, “The Cooling World,” saying, “it is a good exercise to periodically go back and review the end of the earth predictions from the past. The discussion never changes, only the dates and a willingness to exchange cooling to warming to fit the narrative.”
He then listed a few interesting quotes that one could readily plug into global warming alarmist articles today—only these all were offered in support of warnings of global cooling:
- “ominous signs”
- “with serious political ramifications for just about every nation on earth”
- “most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded”
- “advance signs of fundamental changes in the world’s weather”
- “If the climatic change is as profound as some of the pessimists fear, the resulting famines could be catastrophic.”
- “an increase in extremes of local weather such as droughts, floods, extended dry spells, long freezes, delayed monsoons and even local temperature increases”
- “Climatologists are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change, or even to allay its effects.”
- “The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality”.

It is true that there were SOME predictions of an “imminent ice age” in the 1970s,
based on aerosol cooling left over from the previous decades.

anthropogenic CO2 is the primary cause, and it will worsen unless WE reduce emissions.
In the 1970s, there were primarily just 3 Scientists
there was 1(one) book in the popular press,
a few hundred articles in popular magazines
—-> All Triggered by thousands of Press Releases by Fossil Fuel Industry P R Departments.
and
a very small amount of scientific speculation based on the recently discovered glacial cycles
and the recent slight cooling trend from air pollution blocking the sunlight.

There were no daily Scientific Journal headlines.
2.
There was no avalanche of scientific articles.
3.
There were no United Nations treaties or commissions.
4.
No G8 summits on the dangers and possible solutions.
5.
No institutional pronouncements.
You could find broader “consensus” on a coming alien invasion.
Quite simply, there is NO comparison.

… Dr. Spencer and Dr. Christie Of UAH fame…declare that
GLOBAL WARMING WILL CEASE BY 2000
as the earth returns to its natural cycle of Glaciation!
But that never happened.
…it was delayed until the 11 year solar cyclical minimum in 2007-2009.
But that never happened….it was delayed this time too,
until 2015 and again 2018 and
NOW IT IS PREDICTED to ARRIVE with a new Name…A GRAND SOLAR MINIMUM is going to hit us…2020 ! and we will be knee deep by 2030!
Spencer and Christie admitted a few months ago,
…that contrary to their REPEATED claims of a Global Warming Pause
and then a Global Warming Hiatus.
…they recalculated and found that since the 1st Satellite measuring in 11/1978,
temps have RISEN EVERY DECADE by an average of 0.14 C per decade.
…THAT amounts to ———->1.4 C per 100 yrs.
A Fast Geologic Norm is—>1.0 C per 7500 yrs.

The political right sure ran with that one even if, as the author of that Newsweek story states, “‘When I wrote this story I did not see it as a blockbuster,” Gwynne recalled. ‘It was just an intriguing piece about what a certain group in a certain niche of climatology was thinking.'” Any comparison to today and insinuations of “end of the earth predictions” all being the same and easily dismissed is politically motivated and inaccurate.
