Why I love Fossil Fuels

by Nelson Laplante

July 3, 2015

I am going to make and defend a bold and possibly controversial statement, a statement that makes me a pariah in my hometown of Seattle, where such a thing is considered the ultimate sin.

What could be this outrageous statement?

It is that I love fossil fuels.

That right, I like the dirty and evil things that are supposedly causing Global Warming (or is it Climate Change, or is it Anthropogenic Global Climate Change).  Whatever the term for that nonsense, I still love fossil fuels.

I like using them, I like watching the exploration for them, which makes people rich, and I like the drilling for them, which provides high paying jobs for blue collar people, and I like seeing that other people can use them, which means they are accessible.

I like fossil fuels because I like mankind and mankind benefits immeasurably from them. That’s right, I proclaim what should be obvious to everyone: that fossil fuels and their consumption are universally good for mankind at all levels and in all regions.

For the many thousands of years before the discovery of the many uses for carbon-based fuels humans dwelt in a state of abject poverty and misery. To them, weather was among the greatest threats in the form of deadly snowstorms, heat waves, floods, tsunamis, and a variety of other things. Chief concern was the weather-related supply shocks to the food chain caused by droughts, intense rains, pests, etc…. Fossil fuels allow us to fight back against nature’s best, and we are no longer completely reliant on weather and subject to droughts because of irrigation, water pumps, petrol based fertilizers, and GMOs.

It was not until the development of and uses for fossil fuels and the numerous inventions that are run on their consumption that man was able to leave his state of annual terror and bare subsistence living.  No longer did the farmer need to work sun up to sun down to eke out barely enough to survive.  Carbon fuels allowed him to produce more than he needed, which allowed him to obtain ‘luxuries’ for his family, such as soap or a change of clothes.

The inventions that provided for such a ‘luxurious’ lifestyle range from the original steam engine, driven by coal, to today’s internal combustion engine, run on gasoline.  I’m typing and you’re reading this on a computer made of oil-based plastics and run on energy most likely generated from the burning of these so-called fossil fuels.

There can be no doubt that the burning of so-called fossil fuels has made our lives vastly better and because of that I love them and thank God for His provision of them to us. I thank God for the people who came before me and were able to develop these into usable fuels, and for those who created technologies that made them available to the common man.
