As a candidate Donald Trump promised to pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate treaty/aka agreement if elected President. Now he’s reported to be wavering. The Wall Street Journal editorial team gives him good reasons not only to Pexit (exit Paris) but also to Clexit (exit the whole international climate negotiation institution, the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change—FCCC). Here’s the gist:
- Damage from remaining in the Paris treaty (which President Barack Obama treated as an executive agreement, knowing the Senate wouldn’t ratify it) would be greater than damage from leaving it.
- We’re not going to live up to our declared intentions in the Paris treaty, anyway, so why remain party to it?
- Remaining in the Paris treaty subjects the U.S. to coercion (punitive tariffs on American exports) contrary to the country’s best interests.
- Remaining will weaken Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s negotiating stance on other issues.
- Remaining will invite lawsuits from environmental organizations that know they’ll have sympathetic judges.
- Exiting not only the Paris treaty but also its parent organization, the FCCC, will free America from all such shackles, leading to greater economic growth and the prosperity needed to deal with climate risks if and when they come while avoiding the waste of resources if they never materialize.
- America’s embrace of the Paris agreement lacked consent of the governed, Obama having bypassed Senate ratification.
