Father, twice in a single sentence You spoke, through the prophet Isaiah, of Yourself as “the God of truth,” and our Savior Jesus spoke of Himself as the way the Truth and the life and prayed that we might be sanctified through the truth, adding that Your Word is truth. Give us a passion for truth, we pray. Teach us, as the Apostle Paul instructed, to test all things, hold fast what is good. Rid us of the plague of relativism, which refuses to recognize that truth and falsehood are incompatible, which confuses light with darkness and good for evil. Send us consistently to Your Word to learn the truth, and teach us to apply that truth to our daily lives. Make us careful about how we report what we observe in the world around us, that we might not lead ourselves or others astray. In my day-to-day work, Lord, I cannot help thinking of how prone many people are to exaggerate or even fabricate information about climate change, in the effort to support particular policies. Please deliver us from pragmatism, which justifies a lie by reference to an intended end, and give us integrity and uprightness in all that we say and do, that we might reflect the image of the God of truth, who sent His Son as the truth incarnate, and now sends the Spirit of truth to be in us and instruct us, and this we pray in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
