Record Cold of 2021 Reminds Us: Be Wary of Climate Predictions and Energy Priorities

by Vijay Jayaraj

Japan reported 13 deaths and hundreds of hospitalizations in the past week due to the intense snowfall in the country. Residents in Spain were in awe over the record snowfall in their streets. Here in India, Delhi experienced one of its harshest winters in recent memory, with intense cold waves. Does this disprove global warming? Certainly not! However, the extreme cold events bring about questions over the media narrative that climate change is causing milder winters and temperatures … [Read more...]

How Busy Was the 2020 Hurricane Season?

by Neil L. Frank, Ph.D.

The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, with 30 named storms, is going down in the record books as having the most named storms of any season on record. But are we comparing apples and apples—or apples and oranges? Some people blame the recent increase in named storms—tropical storms and hurricanes—on global warming, and infer that we must stop spewing CO2 into the atmosphere to curb the warming and so prevent the increase in storms and the damage they cause. But the raw data for hurricane history is … [Read more...]

Biden’s Climate Appointments and the Potential Disruption to the Global Fossil Fuel Market

by Vijay Jayaraj

With President-elect Joe Biden about to assume office, he will soon roll out his “clean energy” plan, aimed at reducing America’s dependence on fossil fuels. But such a move will cause ripples beyond America’s borders. It will likely impact key developing countries that have become increasingly reliant on fossil fuel imports from the booming U.S. oil and gas industry.Biden’s Clean Energy PlanIn December 2020, Joe Biden appointed his climate team, which included a person who served under the Obama … [Read more...]

Climate Change No Threat to India’s Agricultural Triumph

by Vijay Jayaraj

I meet a lot of farmers in India. Two-thirds of India’s 1.3 billion people depend on farming. When they learn that I do research in environmental sciences, the first question they ask is, “How is climate change going to impact agriculture in India?”Unpredictable MonsoonThe answer is not clear. Indian rainfall seasons have shown no specific trend over the past hundred years, and it is extremely difficult to predict the impact of warming or cooling. The farmers here—like those … [Read more...]

Nuking the Anti-Nuke Crowd: Experts agree the tide has turned in nuclear’s favor

by Duggan Flanakin

How has the Trump Administration fared in meeting the multiple challenges that have slowed the growth of nuclear energy in the U.S. to a near-halt?  And what are the prospects for nuclear energy in a Biden-Harris Administration? It is now seventy-five years since the U.S. ended the war against Japan by dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (both currently thriving). Eight years later, President Eisenhower, in his world-famous “Atoms for Peace” speech before the United Nations, … [Read more...]

The Myth of Glorious Renewables

by Vijay Jayaraj

We all love energy solutions that make life better. It is an undeniable fact that coal propelled the Industrial Revolution and led to the alleviation of poverty in the West. More recently, the oil reserves in the Middle East have made it one of the most economically developed regions in the world.Despite their continuous support to the global economy, these fossil fuel sources have now become unpopular among the climate-sensitive, anti-fossil fuel, green lobbyists and environmental enthusiasts. … [Read more...]

Study suggests no more CO2 warming

by David Wojick

Precision research by physicists William Happer and William van Wijngaarden has determined that the present levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and water vapor are almost completely saturated. In radiation physics the technical term “saturated” implies that adding more molecules will not cause more warming. In plain language this means that from now on our emissions from burning fossil fuels could have little or no further impact on global warming. There would be no climate emergency.  No … [Read more...]

Wind turbines take a terrible toll on birds

by Vijay Jayaraj

There is a narrative on wind turbines that we hear so often: wind turbines are clean and green, and they help us tackle climate change through emission-free energy generation.Anything contrary to that narrative might seem untrue, especially after mainstream media’s relentless promotion of the narrative for the past one decade or so.As a young field ecologist, I’ve witnessed and studied about bird collision mortalities in the most serene Special Protected Area for bird conservation at Alentejo, … [Read more...]

No, Sen. Harris, Climate Change Does Not Threaten Our Air and Water

by Vijay Jayaraj

U.S. Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett encountered a barrage of questions about a wide range of issues during her confirmation hearings. Some were about climate change.Democratic vice-president candidate Sen. Kamala Harris wanted to know Judge Barrett’s views on climate change. She asked, “do you believe that climate change is happening and that it's threatening the air we breathe and the water we drink?”Judge Barrett declined to comment on the matter, as she referred to climate … [Read more...]
