Costs of Climate Alarmism Are Ones We Can’t Afford

by Larry Bell

As previously discussed in my March 20 column, following three decades of cooling from the mid-1940s to late '70s that prominent scientists and media sources warned was a terrifying harbinger of the next Ice Age, a mere decade of warming temperatures later became trumpeted by some of those same experts as a reverse threat, one dramatized by then-Sen. Al Gore during his theatrically staged 1988 U.S. Senate hearings on the matter. For example, a 1978 New York Times headline had urgently warned that … [Read more...]

YouTube Is Fighting against Scientific Inquiry and the Expansion of Human Knowledge

by William Balgord and E. Calvin Beisner

This article was co-authored by E. Calvin Beisner. Curiously, the mainstream media seem to have ignored the story, but it’s an important one. Buzzfeed reported August 7 that “YouTube Is Fighting Back Against Climate Misinformation.” As of July 9, “YouTube is now adding fact checks to videos that question climate change … as a part of its ongoing effort to combat the rampant misinformation and conspiratorial fodder on its platform.” But neither YouTube nor Wikipedia, the source … [Read more...]

History 1, Hansen 0

by E. Calvin Beisner

In 1988, James Hansen confidently predicted that the world would be about 1 degree Celsius warmer today than it was then. Actually, he offered three scenarios: A, "business as usual," with rapidly rising carbon dioxide emissions, which would bring that 1 degree; B, "most plausible," with emissions remaining constant at 1988 levels, which would make the world 0.7 degree warmer today; and C, with emissions rising from 1988 to 2000 and then stabilizing, which would make the world about 0.3 … [Read more...]

Taking Politics Out of Climate Science

by E. Calvin Beisner

[Excerpted from the Washington Times] A red team, blue team match would test the assumptions of man-made global warming. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator Scott Pruitt wants to adopt a red team, blue team approach to weighing the scientific pros and cons about man-made global warming. According to E&E News reporter Emily Holden, “Climate scientists express concern that the ‘red team, blue team’ concept could politicize scientific research” related to global … [Read more...]

When Will I Get My Beachfront Home?

by E. Calvin Beisner

In his 2006 "documentary" An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore said global sea level could rise by 20 feet (~6.1 meters) "in the near future." How near, he didn't define, but generally he's been taken as meaning by the end of this century. That would require a rise rate of 64 mm/year. In 2015, The Guardian, that the bloviating bastion of British Leftism, citing a study in Science, warned that even if we managed, as intended by the then-pending Paris climate agreement, to limit global warming to 2C … [Read more...]

Al Gore Signs Open Letter Supporting Climate Skeptic Scott Pruitt for EPA Administrator

by Chrissy Mooney and Seth Borenstock

An open letter supporting the nomination of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt for U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator organized by The Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation has attracted some very famous signers. U.S. Senate Environment & Public Works Committee Chairman Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) introduced the letter into the official record of Pruitt’s confirmation hearing January 18. Probably the highest name recognition worldwide would go to German … [Read more...]

Whom to Trust? NASA GISS, NASA, or Cornwall Alliance?

by E. Calvin Beisner

After citing a couple of Cornwall Alliance's articles in discussion, an educator friend got this response from one of his former students: The problem with referencing the Cornwall Alliance to discredit statistics from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies is that one (the Cornwall Alliance) is a political advocacy organization with no scientific relevance while the other (NASA) has the weight of objective fact and science behind it. To me there is virtually no legitimate way one can … [Read more...]

Evangelicals, Global Warming, and Intellectual Freedom and Integrity

by E. Calvin Beisner

The great Russian scientist and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov wisely said: "Intellectual freedom is essential to human society—freedom to obtain and distribute information, freedom for open-minded and unfearing debate, and freedom from pressure by officialdom and prejudices.the only guarantee against an infection of people by mass myths, which, in the hands of treacherous hypocrites and demagogues, can be transformed into bloody dictatorship. Freedom of thought is the only … [Read more...]
