Recently a claim has gone viral about a decision by the Oxfordshire, England county council to divide the city into sectors that can be traversed by walking in 15 minutes or less, and then restrict residents’ travel from one sector to others to no more than 100 days a year—except by special permit available by application and at a price. Challenging “Net-Zero”: Conquering Poverty While Stewarding the Earth in the Age of Climate Change
Image: Creative Commons under Unsplash The claim is rampant: manmade climate change is an existential threat to human and planetary survival. To prevent it, we must reach "net-zero carbon emissions," ASAP. That means no more energy from fossil fuels; no more internal-combustion vehicles; no more nitrous fertilizers; eating less meat, or none; getting all our energy from wind, solar, and geothermal, and all our food from "organic" farming; and, consequently, shrinking and impoverishing human … [Read more...]
Newly Released Survey Revealing Evangelicals Most Skeptical About “Climate Change” Is Evidence of Cornwall Alliance’s Influence
On November 17, the Pew Research Center released the results of a new survey about Americans’ views on the environment, particularly climate change. Pew’s report on the survey results says they showed that “highly religious Americans overwhelmingly say God gave humans a duty to protect and care for the Earth, but far fewer see climate change as a serious problem.” Specifically: 92% (including 86% of evangelicals) say God gave us that duty, but only 42 percent consider climate change an … [Read more...]
Fake Science Fuels Climate Extremism
This is a guest article by David Barker. "Follow the science,” we are told, especially the junk science that climate alarmists invent. I recently debunked a piece of junk climate science whose alarmism was featured in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, CNN, CBS, and elsewhere. The junk science was produced by the Federal Reserve. Fed officials claimed that warming will cut economic growth by a third, but my simple statistical analysis showed their results were within the margin of error … [Read more...]
Should Climate Change Take the Blame for Hurricane Ian’s Carving a New Inlet in Florida?
The mainstream media continue efforts to convince a credulous public that Hurricane Ian was something unique that resulted from the combined overall effects of human-induced climate change. The implied assertion is patently untrue. Weather.com posts a clip showing devastation along one of Florida’s barrier islands near the point of Ian’s landfall. No beach structure remains intact in the photo and there is a small inlet that has been cut into the strand, formerly a continuous … [Read more...]
No ‘Climate Emergency’: Cornwall Alliance
More than 1,100 scientists and professionals worldwide have signed a World Climate Declaration (WCD) stating that there’s no climate emergency. The independent foundation Climate Intelligence (CLINTEL) issued the one-page summary on June 27, garnering 1,152 total signatures in 15 countries as of Aug. 23. “Climate science should be less political, while climate policies should be more scientific,” the summary reads. “Scientists should openly address uncertainties and exaggerations … [Read more...]
The SEC’s Climate-Disclosure Rules Violate the First Amendment
This article summarizes the argument of the author’s more technical article, “What’s ‘Controversial’ About ESG? A Theory of Compelled Commercial Speech under the First Amendment.” The SEC is on the cusp of enacting rules to compel companies to disclose “climate risk.” Commentators have critiqued the rules as misguided and beyond the SEC’s statutory authority. But the proposed rules have a more fundamental flaw that will doom them when the inevitable court challenges are filed. The … [Read more...]
Operation Climate-Change Choke Point
In a 2020 article published in the Cornell Journal of Law and Public Policy, Graham Steele described a detailed plan to use federal financial regulatory agency powers to implement a new national industrial policy without legislation. The plan was to use the powers of the financial regulatory agencies to restrict the flow of credit and capital to firms and activities that produce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan uses the Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) to … [Read more...]
Can Computer Models Predict Climate?
Editor’s note: This article builds on ideas Dr. Essex discussed with Dr. David Legates and me on From the Stacks, our livestream program, on March 15, 2022 (view here). Parts of it address highly technical issues of advanced mathematics, physics, and modeling that many readers will find difficult to grasp. Nonetheless, we encourage a thorough reading. Even without grasping the highly technical points, you’ll find its main points reasonably clear and persuasive and its conclusions both sound … [Read more...]
Playing Telephone with a Climate Report: Politicians Obscure Science, Media Fall in Line
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) just released its latest big report, this one titled Climate Change 2022: Mitigation of Climate Change (a mere 2,913 pages). Practically nobody will ever read it. (I confess haven't.) Its Technical Summary is just 142 pages. (No, haven't read that yet, either.) Its Summary for Policymakers is a mere 64 pages. (Still nope---though this one I might actually try to read in the next week or so.) Why would I write about a report … [Read more...]
